Race to have a grand opening

Hottest film of the season, Race, is looking at making a big announcement on its arrival. If sources are to be believed, the film would release at not less than 700 prints just in India. This would make the film one of the biggest releases ever.

When contacted, Ramesh Taurani of Tips did confirm the big plans for Race. "We are quite confident about our film. Looking at the kind of buzz Race has generated, we are going all out in its publicity and release. We are definitely arriving at 700+ prints," says Taurani.

Race comes at a time when Bollywood lovers have been literally starved of any commercial film hitting the screens. Since the arrival of Jodhaa Akbar (on February 15, 2008), no new film has released with an exception of Black & White. However, this experimental film by Subhash Ghai hardly succeeded in enticing the audience that has been desperately waiting for something bigger and more commercial.

"Abbas Mustan have come up with a pakka commercial entertainer in the form of Race so I am sure audience won't be disappointed", says Taurani confidently, "There are elements of suspense, intrigue, drama and lots of action which would have something exciting running on screen all the time. Moreover, the music of Race has been topping the charts all over so that's a great sign too."

Tell him that 'Sexy Lady' is turning out to be most popular of the lot while surpassing the response generated by three other chartbuster songs by Pritam - 'Pehli Nazar Mein', 'Zara Zara' and 'Race Sanson Mein' - and he smiles, "We have managed to hit the right spots with the film's music. Now it's time for the film to do the talking as well."

Race is the biggest multi starrer ever by director duo of Abbas Mustan. Though they have worked with several big stars in the past, this is for the first time that they have six mainstream lead actors on one single platform. They have worked with Akshaye Khanna and Bipasha Basu in the past but this is for the first time ever that they have roped in Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy.

"As is always the case with an Abbas Mustan film, here too every character has an integral part to play in the film. Be ready for some surprises coming your way because you actually don't know what is in store for you," concludes Taurani.

Soha Ali Khan involves in gun battle

Bollywood upcoming actress Soha Ali Khan is in trouble for illegally owning a gun. The police is likely to issue show-cause notice to the actress for letting her father former cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (Tiger pataudi) use the gun issued in her name to kill endangered blackbucks.

A gun licensed in the name of Soha Ali Khan was found amongst the firearms seized from Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi's Delhi residence in 2005. Mansoor allegedly used the gun to kill endangered blackbucks at Jhajjar along with seven others more than two years ago.

A case has been booked against Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, under the wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, for allegedly poaching wild animals including the endangered species blackbucks, for which he had served three days in jail before getting bail. If found guilty, he is likely to be punished with three years imprisonment and a fine.

The police also wants to know how she got the gun license in 1996. She was only 18 years then while the minimum age to get a gun license is 21 years. The license was subsequently renewed but nowhere her age was mentioned and the original file is also missing. Another show-cause is likely to be issued to the actress for concealing the fact that her gun was used by an unauthorised person. She has been given two weeks time to explain to the authroties.

Soha Ali Khan's brother Saif Ali Khan was also charged for hunting blackbucks in Kankani along with Salman Khan, Tabu, Sonali bendre and Neelam the shooting of the film Hum Saath Saath Hain.

Will ‘Race’ end box office dry spell......?

The Bollywood box office has been virtually dry since UTV’s last release, “Jodhaa Akbar”, hit the marquee. Now all eyes are on Abbas-Mustan’s action thriller “Race”.

Releasing March 21, the film is expected to bring some respite to the ticket window. Starring Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Akshaye Khanna, it will also be released by UTV.

Apart from Ashutosh Gowariker’s epic romance “Jodhaa Akbar”, the only film worth mentioning, which fed the box-office during this lean period, was Subhash Ghai’s “Black & White”, about terrorism. The movie opened two weeks ago.

Though Ghai’s movie has been critically acclaimed, it is not exactly a money-spinner for Mukta Arts. Despite being well executed and marked by Anil’s sinewy performance, the film has proved to be a damp squib at the box office.

In any case “Black & White”, which in terms of its theme is unlike other Ghai productions, was not expected to be a big hit. But coming from the Mukta Arts’ stable and the fact that Ghai returned to direction with it after a long hiatus, it had generated hope.

However, collections in the first week of its release were not too heartening a story.

In Mumbai, the movie could collect nearly Rs.60 lakh from 40 cinemas in the first week, which is generally not a figure one would expect of a Ghai production. There are also reports that the movie attracted poor audience in North India in spite of the tax exemption in Delhi and in Uttar Pradesh.

Though the last movie of Tips, “Naquaab” was a box-office dud, “Race” has prospects in the box office because it is a breezy thriller. Made on a budget of over Rs.350 million, it is also the most costly movie Tips has ever made and also the most stylistic production.

Even without taking into consideration Abbas-Mustan’s expertise in the thriller genre, the cast itself should be a big draw for the movie. Anil, Bipasha, Saif and Katrina all had good box-office spells in their respective career, lately. That itself should be favourable for “Race”.

The Taurani brothers, Kumar and Ramesh, said they had spared no effort to make the movie work at the box-office and have reportedly been well rewarded by UTV for their efforts.

Though the Tauranis had earlier negotiated a distribution deal with Nimbus, they opted for UTV as the latter offered a better deal. But they would not disclose how much the deal was worth
